Prayer Chain Necklace

There are times in my life when I find that words aren’t enough. Times when friends or family are hurting and I don’t know what to say or do or how to make things right again in their world. These are times when I retreat into the stillness of my studio and begin wire-wrapping beads ~ and praying. When I’m finally ready to re-emerge, I have finished a bracelet or a necklace and gift it to the person I was praying over. Each bead gets lovingly wrapped with prayers for comfort and healing, strength and peace.

This is one of my Prayer Necklaces. Created for someone very close and dear to me ~ my Dad. I wear it to remind me of who is was, is, and will always be to me. He was a gentle and good man ~ Loved his family ~ Was dedicated to my Mom and us three girls. He diligently worked hard to put food on our table and a roof over our heads. He and my mom instilled values in us that we have subsequently passed along to our kids ~ honesty, integrity, faithfulness, compassion, respect, and so on.

This is for you, Dad. Wrapped in love and rememberance. Created with purpose and intent. Just for you ~ because of who you will always be to me.

Well, Bead Soup Blog Party – 7 is finally here! I eagerly wait for it each year ~ I love being a part of this creative process with such talented artists! It’s so much fun to see what everyone does with the bead soup they receive from their partners. Pretty much, no one knows each other, and the ingredients are not often something that the recipient usually works with. Lori Anderson, the creator of the event, challenges us to think outside the proverbial box and design pieces that we wouldn’t normally find in our design comfort zone.

My partner for this bead soup is the very talented Jodie Marshall. She loves beads ~ expecially beautiful lampwork beads! You can see (and buy!) her work here. Aren't her beads awesome?!? She's had a love affair for beads since she was a little girl and shared her passion with her grandma!

Here are some of Jodie's lovelies that she makes!

Here's what she sent me ~ such a fabulous colors ~ blues, greens, turquoises ~ all sparkly and waiting to be made into unique necklaces, bracelets, earrings, etc.

Here's what I created using Jodie's lampwork and glass beads! I added some things from my own stash ~ matte black onyx beads, rhinestone rondelles, rhinestone disco balls, brass chain, oxidized metal spacers, etc.

I love sparkly bling and am drawn to the style of Miriam Haskell ~ Can you see her influence in my design?!?

Thanks Jodie, for letting me play with your beautiful beads! I had so much fun creating this one-of-a-kind necklace with your fantastic glass beads! You're a very creative artist!

We had so much fun last month when we all gathered in Coronado, California for

Art Retreat by the Beach!

Riki and Diane

Diane Cook, Riki Schumacher and JoAnnA Pierotti were the guest instructors. Their students loved the projects they made and the tips and techniques they learned all weekend long!

Students came from far-and-wide to take classes. Besides a lot of California girls, this retreat welcomed Sally from Georgia and Jeana from Montana!

Classes were fabulous! Diane, Riki and JoAnnA taught awesome projects, and everyone learned lots of new techniques and tips!

Diane's By the Sea class

Student projects turned out so well! We were impressed with them all!

We went out shopping and to dinner one night. The Attic, a sweet antiques shoppe on Coronado Island welcomed us with a fun and tasty Fiesta Happy Hour! We shopped 'til we dropped and then went next door to eat dinner at a delicious Mexican restaurant ~ Costa Azul! Thanks, Brandt ~ your restaurant is super, and the food was delicious!

Erin and I ran a "friendly competition" for name badges. The rules were simple and uncomplicated. Anyone who wished to participate were instructed to create a name badge that stated their name, where they were from and demonstrated a little about "who they were." Here are some of the entries ~ Aren't they beautiful???

We enjoyed lunch each day ~ brought in by us to save time for the students. They could eat, chat with fellow students a little, and head back into their classrooms and get right back to work! Erin and I designed menus that were healthy and delicious.

And Happy Hours each night in the Library at Glorietta Bay Inn were designed to include enough rest and relaxation time for the students and instructors for unwinding at the end of the day.

How fun it was to be involved with Lori’s BSBP this year! You can read all about the party here.

I met the most delightful new friend ~ Lisa Liddy ~ my partner. She and I both live in the Phoenix area (thanks Lori for pairing us up!), and we were able to meet and exchange bead soup ingredients in person! And, wow, was Lisa generous! Look at all of the delicousness she gifted me!

I couldn’t wait to get to work ~ creating some lovelies with all of the ingredients!

I hope you like what you see! It was great fun giving and receiving ingredients this year! Most of all, I am thankful for my new creative friend ~ Lisa Liddy!

When I saw the beautiful glass lampwork beads that Lisa gifted me, I couldn’t wait to put them to good use! And, I knew that I wanted to include the brass flower some way in this creation. I aged the brass with a little patina, used one of Lisa’s pretty green lampwork beads as a center and wired it all together. The luscious purple pearls were a perfect complement to the focal. Next, I created a tassel to dangle from the center of the focal and used some of Lisa’s charms to finish it off. I used Lisa’s beautifully handcrafted closure on this piece. Etched and domed, it’s perfect for this treasure, don’t you think?

Bisbee Bliss

I wanted to create something that could be worn with many of my wired creations – or be beautifully showcased on a simple strand of pearls. I used Lisa’s beautiful glass focal and some of her gorgeous purple pearls to create the main portion of the dangling focal. I added some things from my own stash – rhinestone spacers, Czech glass and metal beads, Sari silk and chain and attached one of my simple s-hooks to make it easy to attach. I think I’ll wear it today!

I combined Lisa’s beautiful pearls and glass beads to create a dainty and sweet necklace! If you know me, you know that I love to pair rustic wire-wrapping with feminine pearls and rhinestones. I added my own simple wrapped closure to finish off this sweet piece. I can’t wait to wear this - maybe tonight!

Most conversations with my 15-month-daughter include this line as she pretends to talk on her sippy cup (aka phone).

So, hello Vivi Magoo friends!

I am so excited to start sharing in this world of retreats with you all. My journey will begin here online blogging for VMP to connect, inform, and share. My name is Sara, and I am Barb and Erin’s daughter-in-law/sister-in-law, respectively. Barb and Erin have so enjoyed the time they have spent with each one of you at the Prairie, Beach, and Desert. I may have met some of you in Tucson at the Art Retreat in the Desert, as that is where I’ve been living with my husband, Casey, and our 15-month-old daughter, Grace.

During the last Art Retreat in the Desert, I bounced in and out of the Hilton Tucson East dropping off all of those [hopefully delicious] sweet treats. Baking - that’s one of my hobbies. You could say I have a sweet tooth, and that is probably an understatement. I will squeeze in some recipes posts along the way. Do you have any to share?

This summer, our little family has moved back to the Phoenix area where Barb, Erin, and their families live. We are so glad to be spending more time with our extended family and now the VMP family too.

This week, I’ll be blogging about all things jewelry from meaningful inspiration to “How in the world do you store/display all of your jewelry at home?” Do you have any questions about jewelry? The Jewelry Box Reimagined

Isn't this one beautiful?

As a little girl, I kept all of my prized possessions in a classic jewelry box. You know, the one with the dainty ballerina in a pale-pink tutu who gracefully twirls around to the theme from the Love Story movie (or something similar). My faux pearl necklace and Tinkerbell pink nail polish were a few of the trinkets I stored here. Now, I have very few pieces of jewelry that could fit into that small beautiful box. That's only because so much of it is chunky, over-sized, and long.

So, how does one store and display these stunning pieces of jewelry art?

VMP's founder Barb does an amazing job of storing and displaying her jewelry, and it's convenient to access too! She styles her cuffs in a vintage silver tray positioned on her vanity (I'm sure she found this tray antiquing or at an estate sale - no doubt there's a story behind it. There always is with her designs). Barb's necklaces drape over her bathroom light fixtures and vanity mirror as if they are three ladies who know how to rock an entire collection of statement pieces at once.

Barb's daughter and VMP's right-hand-woman, Erin, has made her jewelry storage something into what you might even consider sculptures. She genius-ly showcases her necklaces on pillar candlestick holders! Um, how creative is that?! She collects all of her trinkets and baubles in vintage dishes and bowls together on a tray. These vignettes are in her bedroom and really show off her style and personality - a perfect combination of vintage and trendy chic.

I keep my go-to pieces in a sleek, gold-leafed and white lacquered tray in my closet. I have two little chandeliers dangling in my closet, so this set up makes me feel like I'm in a store selecting the perfect accessory to wear with each outfit. I think I'm much more fashionable in my head than I probably am in real life, but it's all about self-confidence, right?!

Creating Ulterior Motive Memories

My husband, daughter, and I just moved into our house, so recently I’ve been looking for inspiration to guide our home design. I pine over the perfectly designed rooms in home magazines. I endlessly scroll through Pinterest and Houzz searches, and sometimes I am still left a little inspiration-less. What I always have to remember is that the best kind of inspiration comes from myself and my memories. I will always have the memory of Grace spilling milk all over my new Elle Décor while she giggled and proceeded to tear up the soggy pages. This gives me inspiration to welcome the unexpected (and not cry over spilt milk). We then went out window-shopping, and Grace insisted on wearing one of my chunky bib-style necklaces. She’s following in her Grandma Barb’s accessory footsteps already! When I remember these things, it makes me feel something. THIS is something to be inspired by.

Making memories while you’re creating [fill in the blank] seems to make the process and the outcome that much more meaningful. That is exactly what I’ve seen happen through Vivi Magoo Presents... retreats. The opportunity for VMP friends to come together and connect while being inspired by each other, the instructors and the venue offers a deep experience. The bonds forged on the journey to creating a piece of art are sure be the thing that inspires you and makes your masterpiece increase in value ten fold. Can you believe summer is coming to an end? For us here in Arizona, we are glad to be saying farewell to the 115 degree days and hello to cool(er) fall breezes.

We also want to say Hello! to one of our beloved instructors, Debora Mauser. She will be teaching many classes in February 2015 at the Art Retreat in the Desert. Debora is a wonderful instructor and comes with years of experience that you'll want to tap into. Watch her video to see with your own eyes what jewelry design techniques she will be sharing with us in February!

Debora Mauser is a self taught artist that loves sharing with students. She has been teaching nationally for years at large venues like Bead and Button, Bead Fest and Tucson as well as bead stores and schools like William Holland and Sawtooth Center. She is a certified Wubbers Universtity and Painting with Fire Instructor. In 2013 Debora was a part of Nunn Designs Innovation team. Her work has been featured in national magazines like Step by Step Wire, and online at Jewelry Making Daily. Debora’s teaching style is fun and low key, with student input being vital to the success of each class.

Sometimes there are people who really leave an impression on you for no particular reason at all. The moment you meet Riki, you feel a warmth of sunshine beaming on your face and a spark of inspiration in your head and heart. Artist and Art Retreat in the Desert Instructor, Riki Schumacher, is truly one sweet gal. We love having her teach our students and be a part of the Vivi Magoo Presents Family. Take a sprinkling of Kansas, throw in a Toto doggie and Prince Charming, a beautiful cabin in the woods and a beach house. This is Riki's life. Born in Kansas, she splits her time between two paradises; one in Washington state, and the other in California on the Central Coast. She is happily married to the man of her dreams, and is a dog mom to her Havanese, Maddie. After putting in 20 years as a professional advertising executive, she had the opportunity to live her dream, retire and start her own jewelry business. That was 15 years ago. She has been published numerous times in Stampington's magazines, and other publications, and has traveled the world to learn new mixed media and jewelry techniques. Her next stage of exploration has been teaching, which has been incredibly positive. She says, "teaching is the most rewarding experience. It allows you to share your knowledge with those who want to change their lives in some small way. What a wonderful gift, to help make that happen". Try to catch up with Riki at one of her workshops somewhere in the U.S. Share in her enthusiasm, have fun, and learn at the same time...we're not in Kansas anymore Toto!

I practiced such shopper's restraint this past week in Tucson at the bead and gem shows! This is all I bought!

Now, it may look like quite a stash to you, but I’ve been known to buy many, many more (and heavy!) bags of beads and baubles in the past! I’m pretty proud of my restraint this time!

The mushroom druzy’s will make beautiful rings or pendants!

I love the fossilized bivalve clams, don't you!

I apparently am having a love affair with pyrite at the moment!

But who could pass up pyrite Druzy's?

And pyrite ovals?

And bone - but I already knew about that addiction! I’ll save that for a separate post!

Every once in a while I find myself staring at a project with such great intrigue and allure that I feel hypnotized. Our Art Retreat in the Desert Artist and Graphic Designer Pamela Huntington's work will do this to you. Simply look at her personal website and you can see what I mean. When strolling through her pages of work, I've been transported in my mind to childhood memories from the big-top circus to family holiday traditions. That's a pretty amazing feat if I do say so myself! Pamela is teaching a few classes in the Desert, so this video gem features her Gathered Relics Mica Book. Enjoy!

Pamela Huntington is a full time artist, graphic designer and workshop instructor living in the woods of New England. Whimsical digital collage, assemblage, one of a kind custom books and fabric arts are all part of her mixed media background.

She has taught at Artfest, Paper Cowgirl, Art and Soul, Art is You, Art-Unraveled, and New England Scrapbook in Connecticut. Published in Somerset Studio publications as well as Cloth Paper Scissor and local newspaper and magazines.

Last post, we met Pamela Huntington on the blog. Now we are featuring Wayward Blooms by Pamela and our amazing instructor Lorri Scott. Lorri and Pamela are such talented artists who can manipulate fabrics to create stunning pieces. It's truly amazing what these ladies can transform in a short period of time! Lorri Scott is a fiber artist and designer from Los Gatos, CA. Lorri magically transforms undyed silk fabrics, ribbons, and garments into fabulous colors using shibori, resist, vat dye and dye printing techniques. She is a self taught weaver, dyer, and clothing designer whose art has shown in numerous publications and juried shows. She is the feature designer in the summer 2012 issue of Belle Armoire showcasing her vintage upcycled clothing aka as “wayward threads”

Lorri has taught and vended at many national shows and is happy to add Art @ Prairie to her resume!

We are getting really excited about our upcoming retreat next month! Erin, Sara and I are working hard to put the finishing touches on everything. We’re going to begin emailing you a lot with updates and information that will help make your stay with us easier and less-stressful (we hope!)

First of all, I’d like to let you know how Erin, Sara and I all fit together. Erin is my daughter – married to Jose – mother to Vivi (age 3-1/2) and Weston (age 9-months). Sara is my daughter-in-law – married to our son, Casey – mother to Grace (age 18-months). We are a family-run business – Erin is our “mistress of the spreadsheet” and takes care of the financial end of our business. She keeps me on track with dollars and sense (not a typo – she really does make sense out of me!). Sara is our social media expert and is responsible for that as well as advertising, marketing, etc. She is also a fabulous baker! You’ll be treated to many delicious sweet treats created by her during our retreat. Me - I dream up the retreats – from instructors to class projects, food to guest vendors, and any-and-all-things-in-between. My forte is neither spreadsheets nor sweet treats! I’m the visionary – the one who always tries to reivent the wheel. The girls help keep me grounded with my feet firmly planted on terra firma (at least they try!).

We will all be at the retreat, along with Jose, Vivi, Grace and my husband, Mark – working hard to make sure you have a wonderful experience. Mark and Jose will be around all week, mainly watching the kiddoes, and they are also kind enough to run our errands for us during the retreat so we don't have to leave The Prairie for any reason. If you need anything, just hunt one of us down, and we will help you out.

We’re working on compiling daily schedules for each of you. They serve as a way for us to confirm where you’ll be on what day. We should have those out to you by email by next week.

You can still purchase lunches and/or dinners <here> if you would like to sign up and haven't done so yet. I’m including the menu for the week in this email. The food is wonderful – catered by area restaurants. We’ve never had a student who complained that they weren’t fed enough or served tasty food!

Many nights, we will travel to local restaurants that we think are delicious and fun places to spend a few hours of your evening. Everyone wants a change-of-scenery once in a while, and we try to give everyone a chance to take a break from their classrooms. While we are out and about in town, we have also arranged for stops at some fun shops. I’m sure you’ve heard of Junk Gypsies. Two sisters who have a fun business and television show related to fashion and home decorating. You can read about them <here>. They will be our stop on Thursday after dinner. If you are coming into town on Thursday to begin your classes on Friday, why don’t you come out for dinner with us and stop at Junk Gypsy store afterwards. It will be a casual and fun way to meet up with other students and your instructors. A great opportunity to break-the-ice and begin to feel at home with us. Stop by The Prairie, drop your supplies, check into your rooms, and join us for dinner and browsing. You’ll be glad you did!
